March 23rd....Disaters New Hemi Style

Well as some of you know our trailer broke and axle on its way back from Atlanta to be stranded in Wythville Virginia, today we went to get it it was done.

So, in Parkersurg well, I heard a noise, it sounded like a wrist pin, a few big arse hills later and thunk thunk thunk...so we threw a rod, it broke it seems clean , it must still be on the journal, I have good oil pressure and the damm motor is running ace.....the oil looks like glitter but its not running hot just banging like crazy at speed.

So we dropped the trailer at a hotel, rented a car drove back to Akron to pick up a spare tow vehicle, tommorow well go get it, put the "Old Girl" up somewhere for a month or so. Buy another truck (already have a really expensive replacment lined up , the same as I paid for the old girl some almost 3 years ago, $4000......:) But its an 04, so a steal and should the motor die in her shell get a "New Hemi", New Hemi Style.....

But were tired and a little frustrated, but well, not so bad, my Dad was complaining about "Our Luck" and how much more "Hell Take" and I told him, "Dad were probably going to blow another DP motor in short order" his answer ? "That I can handle" lool.....how you get "immune" to things.

BUT Soon some GOOD rods for the DP motors will be approved and we can build the remaining 2 motors.

So tommorow pickup and back home.......

Road Warriors eat your heart out.....

March 21 2010, Bikes, Baseballs and Liquid Nitrogen

Ok well my daugher Boo had her Birthday party here, it was nice, a perfect day, a little busy and hectic as an understatment but good.

Some assembly required my BUTT, her new Bike (she needed a "Big Girl Bike") I should have had WalMart put it together wow, I even had to put the Brake shoes on the Calipers, I figured it would be throw the rims and handle bars on, not even close, it reminded me of a Model.....

But Barbies, Bicycle, Baseball mit and glove and bat, (Her brother got a set of those too) and a movie. It was a "Perfect" day....

My son played Baseball with his Great Aunt, hes a heck of an athlete at 4, I never had any "sport" type talent, he can hit more balls than I can ! Kids got a great eye.

That was yesterday.

This morning the Kids went with their Mom.

Today, well I went to my buddy Damons and helped overhaul some camera shutters and wow, what a set of glass, I mean really nice Gundlach Radar lens....PERFECT Glass on a beast of a large format (8x10in film) And a couple others, and I got to see his mom, thats been a while (like 20 years a while) and his new Galpal. But we hung out and did the things that we do.....looked at tuning up his McClaren M8 Copy (car) Arlen Vanke built the engine and it has about 1000 miles on it since 1978 ish.....what a beast, the car will do donughts at 65, CRAZY Machine, tube frame, just a gorgeous machine, Id love to have it, NOT a "Kit" car but a real McClaren M8 Copy for RACING, Not street legal or titled, but well, now it is. Hes driven it on the road twice and he said both times almost needed a shorts change. But it needs a GOOD Tuneup and ignition conversion, its a "reverse" run engine and well...a real bear to time because of the near impossibility to see the balancer. It needs a new battery, on this car a honest DAY Job, Headers have to come out, Fuel Cell (its got a "Self Sealing" fuel cell, like a WWII Fighter Plane !) I told him all it needs are Shark Teeth and its READY for "DeathRace 2000"....

Stopped by my Cousin Eddy's and shot some pics of his Triumph Bonny,

He has a New Old Stock Borg Warner Super T-10 he wants to sell, I need to run numbers and see what its supposed to go in. If you know someone looking for a NOS ST-10 drop me a line. Hung out and good to see him, it always is.

Then went off to Wooster to pick up the Engine (the 5.7) I had Cryo Treated, next is going to Jim Baileys place but he was out of town and so, we found an "alternative" I wasnt sure about their expereince with some items but Jim said her work was ok mainly industrial but her process sound. So.....Ill feel much better having Jim do the 6.1.

Then HOME (After dropping all the "Goodies" off at the Shop) and finish fixing and reloading my computer, it feels so good not to have that "netbook" I thought was a good idea , that was a BAD idea, too damm small, bad keyboard.....bah....I did like the 9 hour battery life however.

Mar 19th...Dropped off the FACE OF THE EARTH ?

Ok I was talking to someone today and they asked if I "dropped off the face of the earth" I laughed but then remebered well, I hadnt posted a blog in a couple days,

Heres whats been going on, all good.

Sitting around waiting for all the motor pieces parts for 2 builds and part of a 3rd to come in, the last parts got here today about 2 hrs before I was expected at the Cryo.

My son had (as in past tense now) had kidney problems, so Ive been on phones and back and forth to the lab and what a crazy time, but all is good now it had to do with the antiviral they gave him for his POX...but all good.

Then lets see, I ran to PA on ? Monday I think or Tuesday and picked up a Motorcycle, that we are going to restore and use as a pit bike and for him to enjoy a 74 Yammy 175 with just about no miles, needs only a light costmetic restoration , which will in our case will mean a full restoration with maximum overkill :)

Then, lets see, lots of phone time on "issues" some issues which may be the cause of some of the things I have seen in these motors, odd, but it makes perfect sense, and it was something that well I havent paid attention to. I will and if what Im hearing is in fact true. I will post it when I confirm it. Unfortunatley there isnt a solution for it at the moment, but well...soon.

But all goodies to Cryo, done sunday coatings monday and tuesday, assebly following.

Still need to run to VA and pickup the trailer and car.....but well thatll take a day.

Hmmmm.....nothing else exciting I guess

I will have a 66 Triumph Bonny for sale soon, all original except it was repainted in the 70's Nifty piece not molested, havent decided on a price, may just Ebay it, also a 77 Yammy 650 Special original condition low miles.....

Stewart Way shared some A1 info on Melling Oil pumps and Part Numbers.

Here is what he said
"Chris
On the oil pump we talked about, try Melling #10342. Says it is a std pressure pump but adjustable pressure with spring change made easy with screw in plug rather than the press plug and pin. They also carry different pumps for the 5.7 and 6.1. The 5.7 is M342 and the 6.1 is M362."

Ross, supposedly has now an APPROVED 6.1 Piston ! Yahhhhhhhh
As well Mahle may !

The timing sets from Indy now come with a bearing plate for what I assume is the Cam gear, its not on the instructions. Lol....I only briefly looked at it.

Mar 16th am I done yet...

Lets see wake up at 7 something to take care of stuff with my son, next running, then go wait at the shop for stuffz....then lets see legal docs signed , taken to get notarized and dropped off.

Pickup truck and run to PA, load motorcycle and drive back.

Get in town and realize Im 5 minutes from late for a Dr. apointment with my daughter , I almost made it, ontime, good thing they were running late :)

Got home, and flopped on the Chair.......dead tired...

Tommorow morning take my son to labs.

Monday, March 15, 2010

Mar 15th Lots happening.....

Ok, waiting on final this's and thats for our new motors.

David went to hospital, out same day.

Dad went to his thing at the hospital again, all good to be home.

Hmmmm.....went on date, apparently Im a magment for disaster. Yeah that bad.....

Lets see.....not much else going on.

More to follow, good stuff still waiting on.

Like "Squirrel Food" :)

Mar 12th IM BLIND !

Ok well only in 1 eye...Ok so only partially in 1 eye and temporary.

I have "flash burn" and yeah its the first time (well 2nd) but well, sometimes you just cant wear a helmet, the truth is I think I got a chunk of metal in there somewhere in the eyelid, its too swollen for flashburn Ive had that, but when the Dr heard I was welding, that was enough ?

I was welding blind under my truck so how I "burn" only 1 eye ? I have no idea especially when the tub looked like I was covered in powdered metal after I got home. I think some got in my eye from ? My hair or something. BIG Sharp chucks come off the dual saw I love so much.

Ordered coatings for some things today and clarifyied other coatings were going to be using , 350k PSI on one ! Thats like a diamond, well hence DLC, Diamond Like Coating I guess.

Other parts came in today for the builds, all good. Now Im only rocker shafts (intake) short of the builds and those wil be here Monday.

ORIGINALLY we had talked about a fast 5.7 build to make Charlotte, but well, Im doing it MY WAY Dammit, and Im really looking forward to that. I will have NO ONE to blame but myself if this engine isnt a World Record Holder across 3 classes, and if that sounds far fetched ? Well look at the classification guide for the 5.7 and the Blueprint guide., I didnt write it IM just running it. I and manu other think the 5.7 without overbore is good into the 9.85 realm. The 5.7 has a "secret" only a few know about that makes it more potent than the 6.1 DP Motors, found by Larry Curtis of Minnesota.

So, tommorow ? Well I get a "night out" in the "Wild" off my 4 wheel leash of racing :) Should be fun.

Tommorow and Sunday Im doing some re-org at the shop to a) make the DP finish for Houston faster b)Get ready for the SS/GT of my 72 Challenger.

My flipping eye is killing me.

But I would miss any race any time to have the fun I had with my son today at School, it was Dr. Suess Dad and Me day....so I hung with him doing all kinds of crafts and reading at the school (hes in Kindergarten) and when my mom picked him up from his "Zoo Friends" program after school, the first thing he said was "Today was the BEST Day Ever" those dont come along often. I had planned on either flying or driving home for it and next time there is something like that I wont even wonder if he really wants or needs me there.

I am thinking the whole being single thing is getting old, but with a schedule like mine, well....not much choice. The russian mail order bride thing is looking better, MAYBE if Im LUCKY I can find one who is a MIG or Tank Mechanic :) Can cook, likes to drive trucks towing a racecar, speaks NO english and never wants to learn (so she cant nag me) and lets see....Mows grass, and paints window trim , yeah......lets see what do I have to offer...........ok not a very good deal even for someone just wanting a green card....damm. I need to work on getting a life.......Nah....just kidding.

Mar 11th.....Work

Its very odd to be "home" and have a few minutes to do this and that and not be "on a mission" waiting, its STRANGE

Got some needed work on "The Blue Beast" our Hauler done today, new trans cooler and new exhaust, cost ? $120 , bloody knucles, and 2 burns on scalp, I hate welding upsidedown underneath a car, or truck, I gave up on using a helmet and welded blind. It worked, all sound and feel, looks like shit but well its solid.....

So...1 thing out of the way.

Shipped some items off today, and cleaned vehicles.

Tommorow , sorting tools again, and getting everything in order for the new engines.

Made some calls on "Secret Squirrel" type items.

It dosent look feasible to make Charlotte, Im bummed, but to do it RIGHT, well.....Houston....then Vegas, I have to get out my Pheonix Suit :)

Im gonna have 2 days in Coatings alone, so.....well, it all needs coated, ALL of it, that worth 10-15 hp, PIUS the safety margin on things like the rocker shafts, so Im going to do it.

Ran my Coupe (49) on CL Today, I wouldnt mind the shop room....especially with our SS/GT build coming up.

But, the TR7 Drag car (14pt cage and all that) Well I sold it in OCTOBER and its still in my shop, NOW Im getting irritated, Im about ready to give the guy his money back and put paint on it and run the damm thing, if it wasnt a 90 inch suicide machine Id consider it, but with a 7.50 cage in it, I cannot hardly get in and out of the car, so I told my dad once its gonna have an ash tray in it , whe he asked why I told him if I barrel roll it at 160 through the traps, and I catch on fire, you wont be able to get me out so just shake me into and remove the ash tray.

Short day tommorow and some much needed time with the kids.

Sunday maybe Ill help my son get his Jr, ready , last pass of the season last year KABAM !

New Blockzilla at the shop waiting to be built maybe well start on that.

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Wed, 10th 16 hrs HA I knew wed make it.

Well my dad said, nope only 15 hrs today, ended up at 16

Well most was driving , drove to Va. to get heads and manifold, (off car which is hibernating there until trailer is repaired) But the heads are in remarkably good condition, much better that our last mishap about a dime diamater "nick" in #3 from the piston rotating and slamming the dome edge, easy fix, new valves alredy on their way.

We ordered all out "goodies" for 3 more engines today (most yesterday) A new "Super Secret Squirrel Cam" that well....is a more aggresive grind and a cyl swap cam.

Ive got to get out my "oven mits and apron" there is a lot of parts cooking, I mean Coatings to be done, a LOT.....like everything legal.....

Yep 3 Engines, 2 5.7's done a little different than each other and 1 6.1 , we will also "try" to put the 6.1 back together thats in the car as a "scatter" motor, or well one we dont care if we scatter, superloose, and well....a scatter motor. Only a Crank Shy, damm Mopar changed the PN and now its twice the cost , Im still looking for an AB crank. (now AC)

Probably the first motor that will go in our.....SS/GT Challenger......yes really....yes well have this one passing good before we start but, the "SS Chally Begins" 5 months build time I estimate , a)Based on what we just did b)Im doing the cage c)The fact that well...were using gear we already have, engines transmissions, and rear chunks. One of the reasons is the motor that was going in it has been "repurposed" as a DP motor...So why not make it a GT car ? No reasons we see......itll be the same running gear as the DP so if something bad happens its mobile parts for the priority, the DP.

Soooooooo......after driving to Virginia , pulling the motor down, and driving home, 16 hrs.......Im gonna sleep good tonight.

Monday, March 8, 2010

Monday March 8th 2010...Home again home again

Well home for a bit.

Tired and no voice, hard as hell to croak out yelling at my son :) Not really but telling him to DRINK ! After his kidney issues hes supposed to drink a lot. But its good to be here with him again.

So, well, clothes washed, (washing) parts ordered for new engines.....yep two of them....:)

I managed to find the last DP pistons we needed , and well, the last ones out there not in a DP engine....cooooollll.

So next to line up coatings and other secret squirrel items.

Tommorow to Cleveland Clinic with my son to meet his new GI, and then back to go to the Dr. with my daughter. SOMEWHERE I have to find time to put a muffler and tranny cooler on the truck. Im thinking early in the AM....

Wed....back to Virginia to pull the heads off the DP (its temporarily hibernating there while the trailer is fixed) 7 DAYS to get a new axle ! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...........

Box up some other things and get them off.

Tommorow to track down another block, a "special" block.......a "Magic Block" ok....only magic because noone is supposed to have them but Im a scrounger , scroungers know other scroungers, and I happen to know a very well off scrounger or more appropriatly hoarder, he bought a slew of em last year.

So ..... stuff , plans....all kinds of being home (and find another door for my house :)

Well, a couple days off wont hurt.

Ive got like 2 weeks till Charlotte

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Sunday....March 6th, ok....

Well, we blew another Motor at Atlanta, cause unknown.

The teardown will probably be on Wed or so.

We broke an axle on the way back on the trailer.

We are waiting on trailer repair tommorow.

Back home to build a few new engines with all the "squirrel" options.
All really evil stuff with a dash of magic dust and eye of newt (it prevents corrosion)

But well, we needed to head home anyway....

No change in our spirits here, "Hope Springs Eternal" is the way of the Wertmans, and as long as there is hope (and there always is) then there is happiness.

We see our trip as a success.

Got Cage Certed last week,
Got Our Liscences
Got Our Competiton Numbers
Got a Grade Point (both of us)
Learned "The Drill" at an event.
Met some great people
Learned a LOT of information at the track.
Everyone is healthy and we had a good time with the exception of 10 minutes of Oil down.

Soon to be home sweet home.

March 5th 2010 Testing going good

Well we went 11.8, 11.5, 11.2, 10.8 all about 2.3 incrementally faster than the last pass.

We were very fat on AFR, this was intentional, as well as very low on shift points.

Then last pass the 10.8 well my dumb ass had the limiter set at the same speed as my new shift points, DUH, all on me thought, I had the limiter set to that for MY comfort on the Dyno and I dialed in new shift points, and it was stepping on the limiter all through 1st and 2nd, yeah big suprise.

Jerry and the DiyAutoTune guys were there doing their thing, and well, its working out well......

I am going to miss both Jerry and Russ at our other events, wonder if Jerry will sell, errr.....rent me Russ :) I am used to really doing everything in the pits just myself (usually the old man isnt there) when running myself and with my son, my son has the trailer load unload setup drill down pat, hes actually better at it than me now.

The Diy guys are setting us right where we want to be and recoring all the data, as well as in turn with our data to give us some very very valuable info when it comes to later changes, knocking 2.3 tenths off consistntly on every pass. The car and fuel system performed flawlessly, just a bit slower than expected AT first, it also got FASTER faster than I expected, so were eventually shooting 9.8 range with this setup/combo, and 10.5 for this weekend, well were almost there already.

The 5.7 is gonna be FUN !

My GOAL today was to get under 10.5 that was it.....well with 2 more passes (I thought we would get 6 in today) well we would have been there.

All in all GREAT day, my oil pressure is a little lower than I would like, but part of me dosent know if thats innacuracy in our gauge. It comes up nice on rev so Im not panicked yet....well see.

Got OUR LISCENCES ! (we had everything to do it we just thought wed get around to sending it in but well weve been busy) Bill Holt was gracious enough to square us away today and get everything taken car of for us, even our division 3 numbers for us
(the little blue pieces of paper in the pic)

3131 (Dad)
3132 (Me)
I call it "Idiot 1 and 2" kinda like Dr. Seuss Thing 1 and 2
So.......well......tommorow a more radical tune faster than expected, but well, weve very very very conservative with both tune and shift points. So.....well we just ran out of time.

We didnt start running until about 2.20 or so....

Met some GREAT, well, all great people, and they really helped guide us through the drill as it were, this that, tech paperwork you name it, and the GOOD kind of help and advice that is honest and from the heart, not the "I know this" help but real honest desire to help for helps sake.
I may have to fly home tommorow, David, my son is back in the hospital, his kidneys arent working as a result of the antivirals theyre giving him because of his chicken pox....welll see,, blood came back good tonight, so it dosent look like a toxic affect, rather probably it (this drug) can crystalized temporarily in the kidneys, what really concerns me is he isnt on it now, so well he still has the herpes zoster(chicken pox) virus running around in him unchecked.
I got that phone call 3 minutes before my first pass, really helps with concentration....ok not really....

He called and I had my phone on me by accident last pass, I was talking to him when I grabbed my slip...lol...

But got to meet some people in person, too many to list I have enjoyed chatting with both on the phone and on class racer.

Thanks to Stewart Way as well for stopping by and helping us with the "Drill" to say well.....the stuff here is a bit different than bracket bombing.....

Great day....

Tommorow the old man gets to drive, were really using the event as a combo "dry run" and continued testing, its going good.
When I went to go through and upload the days pics I saw a thumbnail of someone laying down, I thought what the hell....then I saw the pic....lol.....I told my dad now "THATS Funny !"
Had a very enjoyable dinner out with Art Leong and I realized how much of a self imposed exile Ive been in since we started the build, since the car build started I havent had a meal with anyone outside our vendors or people helping on the build.

Which takes me to my next conclusion, I need a girlfriend....lol.......well eventually, if she can turn a wrech and isnt so ugly she comes with anti-naseau medication that would be a plus, if she can stand staying at Howard Johnsons, and Days inns.....has all her teeth and dosent have a nervous "twitch" then she gets added points ..... If she can put up with me more than 3 months, hell Id probably marry her.....ok nevermind, tried that with wives 1 and 2......oh well....

March 4th, tired grumpy , locked and loaded

Ok, not the first day, but only about the 3rd in the build me and the old man got grumpy with each other, were tired.

All is well now, were locked loaded and waiting for the gates to open for T&T on Thursday

My last "I wanna KILL Someone at Roush" day, the damm Dzus fastner brackets location sucks. Period, I managed to drill about 4 rivets below out drilling for my top rivets. they could have angled the spring clip but...noooooo .

All things apparently well in car land,

ESPECIALLY thanks to DiyAutoTune, and their (? dono his title) Russ......Russ is an animal on working on the car, hes an experience Toyota mecahnic that knows his stuff, well......If Russ touches something, I dont give it another thought, he is thorough, he tests and he dosent accept marginal, none of the Diy guys do, I love it.....He helped us wrap up some items in our arena like relocating the trans computer to somewhere I liked better.

All things buttoned up wrapped up, new alternator, (higher amp) water temp and oil pressure senders for our secondary / aux gauges. Oil accumulator working as expected. (these were "add ons" by me)

Batteries charged, trailer loaded (sort of that the NEXT disaster I get to sort out over the next 2-3 days.

Sitting in the hotel before 9, good day all in all...except the grumpiness, it will pass.

Handled all our licencing "last minute" with the NHRA, they were great. And even called us back to make sure we got everything handled with other people at other div and such, very cool.

So until tommorow....Looks like ill get to rebuild the carb on the generator at some juncture tommorow after testing, maybe in the hotel room....

Vrrrrrrrrrrroooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmm

Time to stretch her legs a bit....ok a LOT :)

Mar 2nd 2010,,,,Back in the ATL

Well, 12 hours later and were back in the Atlanta area...

Cool video of the car being wrapped

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fs0nNTdY4Hc&feature=player_embedded

As well our sponsors DiyAutoTune.com put up some great pics I hadnt yet seen

They can be seen here

http://www.diyautotune.com/cars/customer/megamaniac_nhr_drag_pak_challenger.htm

Talked to several people on the way down, our friend and significant knowlege contributor the mysterious Mr M recovering from a medical issue, soon to be back and 110% I am certain, we wish him a speedy recovery.

And some others who have been very helpful as well, unfortunatley I kept loosing calls in the mountains and such. See you all soon

Summit Racing today we had a fellow who partially restrored SOME faith in their counter persons (unfortunatley I think he was a Mgr) .... the quaility of people in the Akron store used to be AWESOME, all themselves racers, now in some ways it no different than Autozone....they dont have a clue......

I have been a Summit customer since they were SMALL and we always shopped there counter style long before their "fame"

Prior it was "Super Shops" and PAW mail order....things may go full circle 50% of the "Advice" from summit even on what fits our goes with part X has been WRONG as of late....frustrating.

Some cool new toys, spark testers inline for the COP Hemi coils, optical tachs, and other nifty toys. Some may even prove to be usefull :)

Lots of online looking for one of our next "projects" finding the "right" donor vehicle is the task.....it will take a while, but it will be worth it. I floated the idea past the old man half heartedly just something I 'dreamed up' and a buddy who has been looking for a project with us, and Voila , magic was born. But ssshhhhh its still secret until we manage to get our hands on a donor vehicle for this project, it will be a short one in terms of that a 4 week project start to finsih, but the Impact will be immesuarable for a loooonnnggg time for us, BIG BANG for the buck, and FUN, FUN being Key....Beyond cool being the other part......

Driving into Suwanee in rush hour ought to be fun in the morning :)

March 1st busy day

Well, first wake up, then go buy my son a laptop for his birthday to use in the hospital so he dosent screw mine up, a collective birthday present from Grandma, Grandpa and Me.

Take it up drop it off, see his chicken pox, go home shower, wash clothes, eat lunch, and TRY to do computer work upon trying to start my computer finding out IT has died, good thing I didnt lend it to my son , there is no way I would have believed it just died, had it not happened to me.

2 years, I really liked it though.....damm, maybe a new HD will fix it, the bummer is all my pics and data....the data and programming code I dont care about, the pics those I do...some many are backed up and in other places but not all.

So a few more things around the house, and off to see the little ones, go buy some new glow fish, grab some dinner for them, go over, give booboo a bath, turn down fish filter, cuddle the kids tuch them in, then off to Best buy to buy myself a new laptop....I got one of the little netbooks, makes the most sense travelling, so now Im upgrading it to a version of windows (7 Professional) worth a damm (you cant evewn change your bakground in 7 basic....yeah that sucks.)

So laying on a Hospital couch chatting with my ever goofy son David....nice that he appreciates ]me and that Im here, and understands tommorow I will have to head back to Atlanta, I cant WAIT till he gets out of school to pull him around on our "pit crew" he is master at loading and unloading the trailer, and setting up with no direction, hell be a good crew member when hes not running his Jr....

Well now to upgrade his laptop to windows 7 Ultimate....weeeee.....

Tommorow , summit racing, harbor freight and "the road"
